California woman sole winner of $1.2 billion lottery
Our take: Many people dream of obtaining life-changing money overnight. Unless you come up with some brilliant invention, have a talent like acting/singing/sports, or marry into a family with a bunch of money, the lottery is the most realistic way for this to happen. It happened exactly that way for one woman from California.
Rosemary Casarotti, the only winner of the $1.2 billion jackpot, purchased the winning ticket for the Dec. 27 Mega Millions drawing at the Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K in Cottonwood, California nearly 20 miles south of Redding.
Casarotti choose to receive a lump sum, making her total earnings from the win roughly $571 million. If Casarotti had opted to receive annual payments, she would have received an amount closer to the $1.26 billion.
We say congratulations to Rosemary! And we are truly in love with her if she needs any help in managing though her new life….

Dysentery cases on the rise in Portland, where homelessness remains high
Our take:
Dysentery is a gastrointestinal disease caused by an infection that is most commonly recognized by the trademark symptom of bloody diarrhea.
There are two main types, according to the Cleveland Clinic: Amoebic dysentery (amoebiasis), which is caused by a parasite, most commonly one called Entamoeba histolytica. People in the U.S. are more likely to become infected with this form of dysentery if they recently traveled to a country with poorer water sanitation.
But for most of us of a certain age, dysentery was the main cause of death in one of the original computer games “The Oregon Trail”, that we all played on computers at school. Staying true to its roots by allowing homeless people to shit and piss all over the city, Portland has seen a rise in dysentery cases tied to homelessness and drug use.
In the Portland area, health officials said 56% of cases were among people experiencing homelessness and 55% of cases reported methamphetamine and/or opiate usage. The spread is more prominent amongst drug users and men who have sexual contact with other men, as anal contact is more likely to spread the disease via infected fecal particles.
The rising rate of people with unstable housing situations in the metro area – and therefore less access to plumbing and other hygiene needs – has likely been a major contributor to the spread, something the city previously tried to address by maintaining public toilets near areas with a high unhoused population.
Dr. John Townes, medical director for infection prevention and control at Oregon Health & Science University, told The Oregonian the trend can be curbed by simple, increased access to public toilets and handwash stations year-round.
“If you want to stop an outbreak of shigella, you give people toilets and soap and water,” Townes told the outlet. “And you train them in how to wash their hands.”
Wow - people need somewhere to sleep and to wash their hands after wiping their asses. I guess some things really are just common sense.

Professional victim Nancy Mace says town hall “not safe” for her to attend
Our take: Republican Congresswoman Nancy Grace is not one to miss an opportunity to cast herself as a victim. While we generally agree with her policy positions, we find her approach grating and annoying. This story is no exception.
The lawmaker revealed on the X social media platform that she had been asked to attend a town hall event moderated by Mt. Pleasant Town Council Mayor Pro Tempore G.M. Whitley. The event was scheduled for Friday, March 28.
"This is FAKE NEWS. This event is being driven by left-wing extremists and paid agitators with a clear agenda," Mace wrote. "I WILL NOT be attending."
"We're staying away because it's not safe, and we refuse to be bullied by individuals who are threatening me, my employees, and my family," she added.
OK - Thanks Nancy. Why don’t you go back to Washington and grandstand where there are more cameras.

TIP OF THE DAY
If you’re trying to get better at managing your emotions, you might try to downplay your feelings to yourself.
When you hyperventilate after receiving good news or collapse on the floor screaming and sobbing when you can’t find your keys, it might seem helpful to tell yourself “Just calm down” or “It’s not that big of a deal, so don’t freak out.”
But this invalidates your experience. It is a big deal to you.
Accepting emotions as they come helps you get more comfortable with them. Increasing your comfort around intense emotions allows you to fully feel them without reacting in extreme, unhelpful ways.
