Judge orders reinstatement of DOE employees, illustrating an issue currently in front of the Supreme Court
Our take: It is now well known that the Trump Administration has been reviewing government departments for waste and fraud. They have also been looking at departments for redundancies and eliminating them where they exist.
The Department of Education was one such department. Roughly 1,300 job cuts were announced in March. 2 days later, 21 states sued the Trump administration to save the agency jobs.
Today a federal judge issued an injunction ordering the administration to reinstate the jobs that were cut. While this is newsworthy, the real story here is the debate around a single federal judge being able to issue an injunction to stop the government from exercising its powers, essentially trampling on the separation of powers.
This is not a partisan issue. This is not a defense or an indictment of the Trump administration and its policies. It is a question about how much power should be put in the hands of one judge, regardless of the political leanings of the administration or the judge. This very issue is being considered by the Supreme Court right now. It is believed the justices are evenly divided on the issue. It will be a case to closely watch when they release their decisions in June.

Former congressional candidate sentenced after threatening to kill political opponent
Our take: Yikes! William Braddock of St Petersburg, FL was sentenced to three years in prison for threatening to kill his primary opponent in 2021.
Seriously. He threatened to kill his political opponent, Anna Paulina Luna, who was leading the Republican primary. I am not sure if three years is enough for this knucklehead. Good riddance.

A Michigan officer will not face a retrial after a hung jury in the case of a motorist shooting
Our take: Here is the scenario. A police officer pulls over a driver for having a license plate that doesn’t match his vehicle. The driver was asked to produce his drivers license. Instead, he stepped out of his car, and after refusing to produce a driver's license, he ran from the officer.
The officer catches him, and a struggle ensues. The officer tries to use his taser on the suspect, but the suspect gains control of the taser. As the officer and the suspect continue to struggle, the officer winds up on top of the suspect and shoots him in the back of the head.
The officer says he feared for his life because he was exhausted from the struggle and the suspect had the taser, which could be used to incapacitate the officer. It is later discovered the driver's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit. The driver also had a suspended license and a warrant for his arrest in a domestic violence case.
The officer was charged with second-degree murder. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. The district attorney has decided not to re-try the case in front of a different jury, as he feels a unanimous decision is not likely from any trial.
With all those facts, what do you think the verdict should be? Does it change your mind if I told you the police officer was white and the suspect was Black? It shouldn’t….

Tip of the Day
Many different types of breathing exercises can be useful for taming anxiety. Breath control can stimulate a biological response. When your exhales are longer than your inhales, your heart rate slows and your nervous system is engaged, triggering your “rest and digest” response, as opposed to the “fight or flight” response.
One example of a quick and easy breathing exercise is to simply inhale as you count to four. Then, exhale as you count to eight. Repeat this pattern for a few minutes. You should notice your mind grow calmer and your physical tension ease.
