Washington Post editorial member resigns in protest over commitment to free markets and personal liberties

Our take: When I was growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, journalism was a noble profession. Journalism stood for the truth, for personal freedom, and for presenting the most objective and balanced reporting possible. Somehow this profession has lost its way. This story is evidence of that.

Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos recognized that the biased reporting in his paper was hurting its circulation. During a postmortem review of their approach following the 2024 presidential election, Bezos stated the editorial section of the paper would focus on two pillars: free markets and personal liberties. These seem like good ideals to follow.

Not so much for editorial board member Eduardo Porter, who resigned in protest because of the declaration. Porter stated he is a “bad fit for this ideological turn.” Yes—a bad fit for supporting and covering personal liberties. No word yet on when Porter’s next book burning is scheduled, but when it is announced, we will be sure to let you know. Good riddance to this ideologue. Hopefully someone who wants everyone to enjoy their personal freedom will take his place.

Idiot sports commentator invokes capitalism to defend WNBA players demanding more money despite the league never turning a profit

Our take:  Nick Wright is a nonathlete who somehow makes a living talking about sports. Wright is a notorious homer and sycophant for his preferred teams and athletes—notably the Kansas City Chiefs and LeBron James. His defense of the current WNBA labor situation shows he doesn’t know a thing about capitalism either.

At the All-Star game, the players wore t-shirts that said “Pay us what you owe us” during warmups to call attention to their position that they deserved more money than they are currently making. Deserve is an opinion, not a fact. While the players are entitled to their opinion, many disagree with them because the league has never once turned a profit in its 25+ year history. Nick Wright jumped in to defend them, citing capitalism while demonstrating he doesn’t know a thing about capitalism.

"Nobody serious can actually think that Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers making $70-something grand a year is a proper payment for services rendered," he said on his podcast, What's Wright? With Nick Wright. "Are there any other capitalist endeavors—so I’m not talking about social workers, I’m not talking about kindergarten teachers, I’m not talking about firemen—capitalistic endeavors where someone of Caitlin Clark’s quality would make less than $80,000 a year? And the answer is no. It is just outrageous the amount of people that were like, ‘Pipe down, ladies. Be happy.’ So many losers are just boot-licking management sellouts."

Thanks, Nick. That is not how capitalism works. Capitalists invest in and support things that make money. The WNBA has been propped up for a quarter century by the NBA and investors who are betting that at some point their investment will yield a profit. While the attendance and ratings increased dramatically when Caitlin Clark joined the league last year, it still lost $40 million, bringing its lifetime loss somewhere around $500 million. The players don’t “deserve” anything, and capitalism is certainly not the rationale to explain why they should get a pay raise. Wright should stick to carrying water for his idols and leave the economic discussions for those who have actually cracked an economics textbook at some point in their lives.

Democratic representative’s previous comments about illegal immigration being supported for political gain resurface

Our take: Here is a crash course to explain why the border was wide open during Joe Biden’s presidency. As laid out in the constitution, the federal government must conduct a census every 10 years, and reapportion the representation in congress based on the results of that census. When areas gain population, they get more representation in congress. When they lose population, they lose representation in congress. If you flood cities with illegal immigrants, you can gain representation. It doesn’t matter that these folks are not allowed to vote, they just must exist.

Don’t believe us? Check out Democratic Rep. Yvette Clark of New York said in a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing. “I’m from Brooklyn, New York,” Clarke said during the hearing.

“We have a diaspora that can absorb a significant number of these migrants, and, you know, when I hear colleagues talk about, you know, the doors of the inn being closed [and] no room in the inn, I, I’m saying, you know, I, I need more people in my district just for redistricting purposes.” The next time you hear a politician supporting illegal immigration, remember why they are supporting it. It is not to further the interests of the citizens they represent. They are supporting it to grab more power at your expense.

Tip of the day – building resilience and grit

Be active, not passive. Rather than passively waiting for things to get better, take steps to improve the situation. If there’s something constructive you can do, do it.
