Mother wins $500k settlement after elementary school segregated children by race
Our take: Since its inception, America’s track record on racial equality has not been good. For hundreds of years, non-whites were considered less than human, excluded from the Constitution, labeled as property in court cases, and enslaved and murdered with no repercussions for the perpetrators.
Since then, millions of people have fought and died to square the circle on racial equity. Despite the hundreds of years of unbelievably bad acts, much progress has been made in the past 60 years. In today’s world, most people of all races see each other as equally deserving of living a good life, pursuing happiness, and having the same opportunities.
It looks like some teachers in Atlanta did not get the memo. At Mary Lin Elementary, parents were allowed to request which homeroom their child was assigned to. Kila Posey was and is a teacher at the school and requested a specific homeroom for her daughter, who was entering second grade. The principal at the school, Sharyn Briscoe, tried to talk Posey into putting her daughter in a different homeroom because “Briscoe had designated other homerooms as Black classes.” Both Posey and Briscoe are Black.
Posey did not appreciate that skin color was being used to segregate her daughter to specific homerooms, limiting the parents of Black children’s choices unfairly. Despite raising her concerns above the principal, no corrective actions were taken or communicated.
In fact, Posey was part of an after-school program that was terminated after she raised her concerns, which she saw as retaliation. After exhaustive investigations, some aided by the NAACP, Posey filed suit in Federal District Court. The case was eventually settled for $500,000.
Yikes! Where do we even start? Segregating people by race or ethnicity for anything other than medical reasons (i.e., sickle cell anemia) is wrong. Discrimination as a form of “leveling the playing field” is wrong. Doing things for any reason other than merit is wrong. It is unbelievable that all these highly educated people could get this as wrong as they did.

California budget expected to be at least $10 billion short, not including any potential federal cuts
Our take: Despite the massive amount of industry in California, like Silicon Valley and Hollywood, the state is facing a huge budget deficit. Insiders with knowledge expect Governor Gavin Newsom to present a budget with a deficit of at least $10 billion.
Some of the reasons listed for the deficit are a Medi-Cal shortfall and delayed tax filings from Los Angeles-area wildfire victims.
We think a few other things need to be looked at: California has spent billions of dollars on providing services for illegal aliens who live in the state. They have also created an environment that drove massive companies like Oracle and Tesla to relocate their headquarters to different states. They also locked down the state more tightly and for longer than most states during the pandemic.
This is a great example of “fuck around and find out.” When you push people far enough, they will act in their best interests. California has been mismanaged for decades, as Democrats have controlled the state since Arnold Schwarzenegger left the governor’s mansion in 2011. Their policies have driven people out of the state in record numbers, so much so that the state is expected to lose seats in Congress based on the last census. Until they come back to reality, Californians will continue to face situations like this budget shortage. We know several people who live in California and hope they get it figured out quickly.

Former TV producer sentenced to 18 months for fraud and embezzlement
Our take: We included this story for one reason: to make sure people know that if you cheat and steal money, you will get caught and you will be punished. That is all.

Tip of the Day
Sometimes, improving your mental health means trying a hobby, learning new skills, or challenging yourself. Maybe there’s something you’ve done in the past and want to return to or a hobby you’ve always wanted to focus on.
It’s often best for this hobby to be something that you enjoy and can do on a regular basis. You can take up a new hobby by yourself or with a friend. Either way, trying something new may boost your mental health and help you feel calm.
For example, trying meditation or mindfulness can have significant effects on your mental health and provide you with an activity that allows for more meaningful connections in your life.
