Article questions whether people with kids should get priority for time off around holidays

Our take: A childless woman had her pre approved Christmas leave canceled so a co-worker could have the time off to celebrate with her newborn. This raises the question of whether parents should get preferential treatment for PTO over people with no kids. As the father of 3 sons, I am perfectly positioned to make the call on this question. The only correct answer is – absolutely not.

No one forced you to have kids. No one forced you not to have kids. Those are choices everyone gets to make (adopted kids are 100% your kids, so even if you experience infertility, you have choices), and they must handle the consequences of those choices. Any decent team at work will do their best to work with each other to accommodate the personal preferences of their coworkers. That said, simply having kids does not bequeath you with a superior status as it relates to PTO. This one is straightforward.

A woman breaks into houses, cleans them meticulously, and leaves a bill for her services

Our take: This is wild. This woman breaks into people’s houses while they are sleeping, cleans them meticulously, then leaves a bill for her services. The woman was shocked when the police came and arrested her. She pled guilty to attempted burglary (despite not stealing anything) and was sentenced to probation.

A few months later, she was arrested for shoveling someone’s driveway after a snowstorm without the homeowner’s permission. She may have a challenge in how she thinks, but she’s a hard worker for sure!

UNC student newspaper apologizes for making jokes

Our take: A UNC student newspaper ran some satirical articles in its April Fools edition. Some of the headlines were “Trump orders Alcohol Law Enforcement in Chapel Hill to be replaced with ICE agents” and “UNC brings back DEI – for whites.” Several students complained, and the paper issued an apology, calling their attempt at humor “insensitive.”

We have two comments. First, just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right. You don’t have to apologize because someone else disagrees with your sense of humor. I like dark humor, and I find many things hilarious that really tweak other people. That’s a you issue, not a me issue. I don’t care if your sense of humor is different than mine, and I am certainly not going to change my sense of humor to comply with your standards. You can be offended. I’ll be over here giggling.

Second, the paper should have issued an apology, but not for being insensitive. They should have issued an apology for such poor attempts at humor. It should have been comedians who were offended by these articles, not activists or woke college kids. These jokes were an affront to all those who make a living making other people laugh. Do better, UNC school newspaper.

Not yet” is OK. When struggling with a task, remind yourself that you just haven’t mastered it “yet.” If you stick with it, time and practice will lead to improvement and self-development.
