ABC settles Trump defamation suit with a $15 million donation to the future Presidential Library.

Our take: ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos created a $15 million liability for his company when, in March of 2024, he repeatedly and incorrectly stated then candidate Donald Trump had been “liable for rape” while interviewing Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Caorlina, herself a victim of rape as a teenager. Trump was found liable by a civil jury for sexual assault, which is clearly different than rape from a legal perspective. In addition to the donation, ABC must print an editors note stating they regret the statements made during this segment.

Stephanopoulos came to national prominence during the Clinton administration in the 1990’s. He notably pushed for an aggressive approach to discredit women who accused the former president of sexual misconduct, including rape. These women included Juanita Broderick, Paula Jones, and Jennifer Flowers. It is unbelievable that now Stephanopolous presents himself as an impartial arbiter of the truth. He was literally a Democratic operative for decades and is now an anchor at ABC News. This story provides a little bit of public karma, which we appreciate.

CEO murder continues to draw contentious statements

Our take: Senator Bernie Sanders is the latest person to echo a popular sentiment: murder is wrong, but I understand what drove the thought process. His comments came during an interview on “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Sanders was quick to qualify his statements, noting that he does not condone violence and that the murder suspect would get his day in court. But he also stated he understood why people who are “pushed too far” could resort to such actions.

One thing that bothers us when we hear politicians make statements like “the system is broken” is that people who have the power to change the system should not be allowed to publicly lament it without taking action to change it. The facts are that health insurance is one of the largest and most profitable industries in the country. It is set up for the companies to make profit, not to provide the best possible health outcome for citizens. The industry is regulated largely by the federal government. The same federal government that receives hundreds of millions of dollars from the healthcare and pharmaceutical lobby groups. The same federal government uses healthcare and pharma payments to fund most of the agencies that oversee and regulate the same industries. The same federal government that is elected to represent the people but is heavily influenced by the same industry it decries in interviews.

Until we separate the funding and the overseers from the unending stream of money flowing through Washington, we are doomed to continue to get the same outcomes. Higher costs than the rest of the developed world, lower life expectancies than the rest of the developed world, and profit ahead of health outcomes for the very people it is designed to serve.
