Leaked documents from the teachers’ union illustrate the political objectives of the organization instead of advocating for teachers and education

Our take:  It’s not front-page news to anyone that the NEA, the national teachers’s union, is a progressive organization. One would think they exist to advocate for teachers and make sure students in public schools get the best possible education. Based on leaked agenda documents, they appear to care much more about supporting political causes than they do about the education of America’s youth.

The leaked documents show agenda items such as “using the term ‘fascism’ (yes—the teachers spelled the word ‘fascism’ incorrectly) to correctly characterize Donald Trump’s agenda, a resolution that labeled any attempt to eliminate the US Department of Education as an illegal, anti-democratic, racist attempt to destroy public education, and protecting the rights of students to dissent and organize against Trump’s policies and against ICE raids and deportations.”

Yikes. This is what they are focused on when around a quarter of American eighth-graders are proficient in math, and reading scores are similarly bad? In 2019, the organization flatly rejected a resolution to “rededicate itself to the pursuit of increased student learning at every public school in America.” I guess they don’t have time to teach around their political activism. This organization raises over $380 million in annual revenue. It’s big business, and people are foolish if they think this organization cares about anything other than protecting the status quo.

Doctor fired after reprehensible post about Texas flood victims' issues, unconvincing public statement

Our take:  A Houston pediatrician who thought it was a good idea to post that those who died in the Texas flooding “denied climate change and got what they voted for” was unsurprisingly fired by her employer. She has released a public statement trying to walk back her words.

Dr. Christina Propst, who in the statement said she was “a mother, a neighbor, a pediatrician, and a human being who is deeply sorry,” stated she was unaware that anyone had died when she made her post.

Cool story, bro—we don’t give a fuck. You decided that at the worst moment of these people’s lives, you needed to publicly judge them and tell them they got what they deserved.

We remain unconvinced that you are sorry you did what you did; you are only sorry you got fired because of it. We don’t wish ill will on anyone, but it is clear this doctor deserved the consequences she is now facing.

120 confirmed dead in Texas flood aftermath

Our take: This terrible situation in Texas continues to deliver bad news. The death toll after the devastating floods in Kerrville, Texas, is now at 120, including 36 children. More than 160 people are still missing. The search for missing people is now in its seventh day.

We remain hopeful that some, if not all, of these people are simply not able to communicate and will be rescued. Please keep this community in your thoughts and prayers.
