Leading NYC candidate caught making up a story about his “aunt” experiencing racism after 9/11
Our take: Zohran Mamdani is likely to be the next mayor of New York City. He is also a self-proclaimed socialist and a Muslim. Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo took a shot at Mamdani when Cuomo was on a podcast, laughing when the podcast host said Mamdani would probably be cheering if another attack happened when he was mayor.
Mamdani held a press conference to push back. During the press conference, he appeared to break down in tears when he talked about his aunt who chose to stop riding the subway immediately after 9/11 because she did not feel safe while wearing her hijab.
There are a few problems with Mamdani’s statement. First, he made no mention of the almost 3,000 people who died on 9/11 – just his aunt. Second, there was widespread support and calls for tolerance for Muslim Americans following 9/11. Third and most importantly, Mamdani has one aunt, and she lived in Tanzania, not New York. When pressed on the statement by media, Mamdani said he was actually speaking about his father’s distant cousin.
Sure – that seems logical. I confuse distant cousins with my aunts all the time. This guy is a huckster, and the motherlode of bad ideas – free buses, rent freezes, government owned grocery stores, and seizing the means of production. New York’s liberal elite is going to get exactly what they want. Remember that a year from now when they start complaining about it.

AOC tries to be a Mean Girl to Riley Gaines. Gaines zings her with a great comeback
Our take: Riley Gaines is a conservative advocate who rose to fame protesting she had to swim in NCAA races against biological men. AOC is a liberal congresswoman who shot to fame by ousting a 10 term incumbent and gaining a loud national voice. They recently traded barbs on X, with Gaines getting the last word.
Gaines criticized AOC, NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, and Senator Bernie Sanders. It showed a photo of them together with the caption “We are being destroyed from within.” AOC shot back with a comment stating, “Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in 5th”, referring to Gaines 5th place finish in a national championship race against biological male Leah Thomas. AOC then told Gaines to “get a real job.” Gaines comeback ended the exchange “I have a real job. I’m a mom.
It’s the most important & rewarding job in the world. I think if you had a baby girl like I do, you’d understand my positions a little better.” No word from AOC yet, but smoke was seen coming from her apartment, presumably from her brain as she tries to process the comment.

Woman accepts proposal in public, then rejects it in private
Our take: A 24-year-old man proposed to his 22-year old girlfriend at a party celebrating the anniversary of the boyfriends parents. The surprised woman accepted the proposal, then told her boyfriend privately she could had only accepted the proposal to spare him the embarrassment of rejecting him in front of family and friends.
Sounds pretty cold, right? Not so fast. It turns out the couple previously had multiple conversations about marriage where the girlfriend was explicit that she wanted to work and build a career before she would consider marriage. Unfortunately, her boyfriend decided to shoot his shot. He should not have been surprised when the girlfriend was not willing to move forward with his proposal. It seems like the boyfriend was trying to shame or control the girlfriend by putting her in a public and awkward situation. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

Tip of the day for making friends
Be authentic, don’t try to show off
All of the above recommendations might seem like I’m recommending that you be someone you’re not. I’m not recommending that at all. Instead, I want you to be an authentic version of yourself (there are lots of versions of ourselves) - but choose the version that is more in the directions recommended above, in general. If there is a positive and negative version of you, generally choose the positive version. But most importantly, don’t try to impress people all the time - if you’re confident in yourself, you don’t need to impress. Instead, be a genuine person, not just the “best you.” When this recommendation is in conflict with any of the above recommendations, choose this one.
