Police officers were injured by violent rioters in Portland at ICE facility
Our take: We were born and raised in Portland, Oregon. It used to be a sleepy town that was known for the Rose Parade in June, the Trailblazers, a lot of rain, and beautiful outdoor spaces that people could experience with a short drive.
It has morphed over the past 20 years into a city known for intentionally being “weird,” a huge drug and homelessness problem, and regularly allowing riots to happen in the streets.
This weekend was no different. Violent rioters tried to breach an ICE facility in Portland, leading to multiple officers being injured to repel the attacks and arrest some of the perpetrators. Rioters threw fireworks, smoke grenades, and rocks at federal law enforcement agents in their attacks. They have also been calling for attacking ICE agents at home, posting their names, photos, and home addresses on posters around the city—commonly known as “doxing.”
To make this as straightforward as possible, attacking law enforcement officers in the line of duty has always been and always will be a crime. Your intentions or perceived pureness of heart are not relevant.
Many people who did not touch a single person on January 6th languish in prison years later. We fully support throwing the book at these offenders. Try them, and if they are found guilty, give them the maximum sentence allowable. You don’t get to assault law enforcement officers because you hate the president and his policies.

LA Mayor Bass describes protests as “overwhelmingly peaceful”
Our take: Mostly peaceful protests. This is a phrased that made its way into the public lexicon during the “summer of love” in 2020 when cities across the country saw massive protests following the death of George Floyd. Let’s take a closer look at the definition of each word in the phrase so we are all aligned on what this means.
Mostly means “as regards the greater part of a number”. Peaceful means “free from disturbance”. Protest means “a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something”. Put them together in the context of the protests we have seen in LA, and from our perspective it doesn’t pass muster. It is debatable, but let’s not debate it.
Instead, let’s focus on the word protest. One of the great things about our country is the fact that the right to peacefully protest is enshrined in the first amendment of the constitution. We support this right 100%. But what are acceptable forms or protest? For centuries, the right to protest has been governed by some narrow but absolute thresholds. These include police being responsible for allowing both protests and counterprotest to be in sight and sound of each other, but not allowing them to destroy property or engage in physical violence. If you do not have a permit, you cannot block traffic. You cannot prevent access to public buildings or properties, and you cannot interfere with the operations of law enforcement officers or with government operations.
With those definitions, it becomes clear Mayor Bass is telling people what she wishes were true, not what is true. Traffic has been blocked on multiple occasions. Millions of dollars of property have been destroyed. Cars have been set on fire. Dozens if not hundreds of law enforcement officers have been attacked with fireworks, rocks, bricks, smoke grenades, and by people.
Mayor Bass’ primary job is the safety of all LA residents. She and her administration continue to prioritize pandering to a small percentage of loud and violent criminals and those who are in the country illegally. It’s a gross dereliction of her responsibilities. It’s also worth noting that Mayor Bass served as a congresswoman for 10 years before becoming mayor of LA. She had a decade to introduce immigration legislation and work with her peers to reform the immigration system that is so badly broken. Her failure on this issue stretches back for over a decade.
Don’t believe her when she tells you things are under control. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Lawmakers vote against banning illegal immigrants from voting in DC elections
Our take: This one is pretty straightforward. In a house vote passing a bill that would overturn a law in Washington DC allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections, 148 Democrat lawmakers voted against the bill. They want to allow non-citizens to continue to vote in local elections. We would venture to guess they want non-citizens to vote in federal elections as well. This seems so beyond the pale that ot should be a Babylon Bee headline. But it is very real.

Tip of the Day
Learn to spot fake news. It's not always easy to spot false or misleading content, but a good rule of thumb is to look at the language, emotion, and tone of the piece. Is it using emotionally charged language, for instance, and trying to get you to feel a certain way? Also, look at the sources of facts, figures, images, and quotes. A legit news story will clearly state its sources.
