Lawyer in murder trial uses AI to make arguments, admits several errors were included that neither they nor the prosecutor caught

Our take: An Australian lawyer was forced to apologize to the judge presiding over his murder defense after he made submissions to the court that included fake quotes and nonexistent judgments after the attorney relied on AI to put together the pleading. The fake submissions included fabricated quotes from a speech to the state legislature and nonexistent case citations purportedly from the Supreme Court.

Good lord. This guy is representing a client accused of murder, and he can’t be bothered to write the arguments himself? Vincent Gambino from “My Cousin Vinnie” must not have been available to take the case.

Ground squirrels take over North Dakota town

Our take: Minot, North Dakota, is a town of around 50,000 people. It is North Dakota’s fourth-largest city. According to the pest control expert in charge of dealing with the issue, the population of Richardson’s ground squirrels may exceed the human population. The squirrels have lived on the prairie for centuries, which means they are difficult to control. They have burrowed under concrete, causing damage to sidewalks, driveways, roads, and even the runways at the airport base near the town. One woman said they burrowed into her apartment and nested in her daughter’s clothes.

Holy moly! This sounds like the plot of a bad horror movie from the 1980s. You could count on those movies to have at least one gratuitous but glorious boob shot in them. The folks in Minot have no such luck. They just must deal with tens of thousands of prairie rodents overrunning their town. Godspeed, people of Minot, Godspeed.

The Netherlands holds an annual ginger festival so soulless red-heads can compare notes

Our take: As a fellow ginger, we had to include this article simply to let people know that we gingers meet and communicate regularly. It’s true we have no souls, and our only weakness is sunlight. But remember – the Chucky doll in the movie Child’s Play was a ginger as well. Sleep well, my friends!

Tip of the day for changing habits

Persist.
Research has shown that what you’ve done before is a strong indicator of what you’ll do next. This means established habits are hard to break. But if you keep at it, your new behaviors will turn into habits, too. Persistence works — at first, it might be painful to get up at 5 a.m. for that jog, but soon it will be second nature.
