Study shows nixing ultra-processed foods gives people the best chance to avoid aging issues

Our take: We all know intuitively that eating a healthy, balanced diet is beneficial for our overall health. A new study of middle-aged dietary habits suggests it has a major impact on aging, specifically aging without major health issues cropping up later in life.

"Studies have previously investigated dietary patterns in the context of specific diseases or how long people live. Ours takes a multifaceted view, asking, how does diet impact people’s ability to live independently and enjoy a good quality of life as they age?" said co-corresponding author Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard Chan School, in a Harvard press release.

The researchers analyzed diet and health data for more than 105,000 women and men aged 39 to 69 over a 30-year period, drawn from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

Based on the participants’ self-reported diets, they were given scores for eight different healthy eating plans based on their intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts, and legumes, as well as some healthy animal-based foods, including fish and certain dairy products, the release stated.

They also investigated the participants’ consumption of ultraprocessed foods containing added sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats.

The diet with the most benefits for healthy aging was the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), the researchers found, which was linked to an 86% greater likelihood of healthy aging at 70 years old.

Boston truck accident leaves 6 injured, driver in critical conditions

Our take: The driver of a rental truck lost control of the vehicle on a crowded downtown Boston street on Tuesday, injuring the driver and multiple others.

The truck, a yellow-colored Penske rental truck, struck multiple poles and flipped on its side before becoming wedged between a pole and a building, authorities said.

Firefighters used extrication tools to remove the trapped driver from the cab of the truck, a police spokesperson said. He is now in stable condition.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin R. Hayden said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon that officials do not have any reason to believe the crash was an "intentional act."

"We'll do everything that we can to come to a full understanding of the facts of the investigation and make a determination as to whether or not there's any liability here," he said. "This easily could have been a far worse circumstance, given the time of day and how many people tend to be in this area at the time.

"In many ways, we're fortunate, but we continue to keep those who are injured, and particularly the person in critical condition, in our thoughts and prayers."

Two patients were taken by ALS (Advanced Life Support) ambulances, and the other two patients were taken by BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulances, according to Boston EMS.

We hope that all involved are able to make a full recovery. This accident illustrates just how fragile life can be. One minute you are walking down the street, and your whole life can change in an instant.

Insurance CEO fired for hiring PI’s to dig up dirt on customers, lawmakers

Our take: With yesterday being April Fools Day, we had to research this story to make sure it was not a fake headline. Believe it or not, it is true.

The CEO of a Texas health insurance company was fired after admitting before a DOGE panel of state lawmakers that he hired private investigators to spy on customers and obtain sensitive details about their lives.

Mark Sanders was dismissed from his duties as chief executive of Austin-based Superior HealthPlan after he testified before the Texas House Delivery of Government Efficiency Committee in a hearing on Medicaid procurement last week.

Sanders acknowledged Wednesday that private investigators were hired to surveil and glean background information on state lawmakers, journalists, healthcare providers, and patients.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Thursday that his office was launching an investigation into the company after Sanders’ remarks.

“The allegations concerning Superior’s actions, such as actions that were characterized as potentially blackmailing lawmakers to secure state contracts and surveilling private citizens to avoid paying legitimate claims, are deeply troubling,” he said in a statement.

While the embattled health insurance firm was already facing lawsuits for declining coverage, a series of private investigations allegedly started in 2017 when Sanders took over as CEO.

Sanders told committee members that the company had since abandoned the practice of so-called “routine” background checks on customers.

“We’ve done what I would call general research,” he said. “Anything that’s publicly available.”

According to documents obtained by the Morning News, State Representative Giovani Capriglione, State Senator Charles Schwerner, and former State Senator Dawn Buckingham—all Republicans—are among the victims.

What the fuck? We have no idea why this guy thought this was an appropriate course of action or how he even went about doing it. It is wild to think that the leader of a company could do enough mental gymnastics to think this was a good idea.

There is no definitive statement that these actions violated any laws, but they certainly violated the trust of customers and other associates at the company for sure. No one expects that your insurance company will hire a private investigator to dig up dirt on them. This is wild stuff!
