A New York councilwoman wants to fine businesses for shoplifters stealing from them

Our take: You cannot make this up. Councilwoman Amanda Farias introduced legislation to cap self-checkout transactions to 15 items or less, require businesses to have one person to monitor customers for every three self-check lanes, and fine businesses $100 if they do not comply.

Holy cow. Let’s throw a few things out here. I have run grocery stores for 30+ years. I can assure you anywhere in the country a grocery store is operating, people are trying to steal from it. Sometimes it's customers, sometimes it's employees, but it's always someone. Next, the government has zero business telling a store how to run its operation. Inserting yourself into the minutiae of how a business runs is beyond the pale. Finally, and stick with me because this may be revolutionary, but what if we punished the people stealing stuff? I know, I know – it sounds crazy, but maybe if there were actual consequences for stealing other people’s property, they might stop doing it.

Shocker – nonprofit CEO accused of stealing more than $1 million in funds meant for homeless people

Our take: When it’s not your money, you don’t pay the same amount of attention as you do when it’s your bank account affected. Nonprofits are prime targets for bad actors for just this reason.

This woman was arrested on February 20th and accused of misappropriation of public funds, grand theft, and filing four years of false tax returns. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners says non-profit organizations accounted for 10% of fraud globally. Think about that the next time you are asked for a donation. Do some research before you donate, and know where the money is going and who is responsible for oversight.

Yet another billionaire moves from California ahead of proposed wealth tax

Our take: Listen up, elected officials! If you tax people unfairly, they will move somewhere they don’t have to pay those taxes, especially the super wealthy with the resources to make those moves. Travis Kalanick, a billionaire founder of Uber, has left California for Texas as a bill proposing a “one-time” 5% wealth tax on total assets for California billionaires is being considered.

Several other billionaires, including Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, have already either moved or announced plans to leave California, citing the “billionaire tax” as a primary reason. If you want to balance your budgets, cut costs, and eliminate fraud and waste. Stop treating the top 50%, who already pay the vast majority of taxes, like a limitless ATM you can abuse.

Tip of the day – How to find purpose in your life

Ask the big questions

Draw up a list of questions that touch on the most important things in your life, then write down your answers. Ultimately, your answers will help you see a pattern of who and what you prioritize. Once you know that, you can set goals based on your priorities.

So what sort of questions should make the list? That will vary from person to person, but the “life questions” below will get you started.

  • Who is most important to me?

  • What are my happiest memories and experiences?

  • What is the best way for people to live?

  • What makes me feel most fulfilled?

  • What is my biggest regret?

  • What are three things I hope for?

  • What do I do when I fail at something?

  • What individual attributes are most important to my identity?

  • What would be worth dying for?
