Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer were murdered; his son was arrested for the crime

Our take:  Rob Reiner was the son of Carl Reiner, himself an entertainment icon. The younger Reiner became a legend himself, starring in “All in the Family,” an iconic sitcom from the 1970s, then going on to direct and produce such classic films as “This is Spinal Tap”, “The Princess Bride”, “A Few Good Men”, and “When Harry Met Sally”.

Reiner was found murdered in his home on Sunday, alongside his wife, Michelle Singer. Their youngest son has been arrested for the crime. This is a sad story on so many levels. Our thoughts are with the Reiner family as this all plays out in the public eye. Keep them in your thoughts as well.

Career shoplifter tries to rob Walmart during an event with dozens of police officers in the store

Our take: A woman stole roughly $600 of merchandise from a Walmart in Wisconsin. She then attempted to return to the same Walmart a few days later and try again. Unfortunately for her, there was a “shop with a cop” event going on when she showed up. The police recognized her and immediately arrested her. It’s a Christmas Miracle at Walmart! It warms our hearts.

Teen apprentice dies after deadly “prank” with air compressor at work

Our take: A 15-year-old boy in Turkey lost his life when his co-workers tied his hands, pulled down his pants, inserted a compressor nozzle in his rectum, and blasted compressed air into his rectum, tearing apart his intestines and several organs.

Yikes! This was a jailhouse hit, not a prank between coworkers. In case you need guidance, anything that involves involuntarily inserting things into other people’s rectums is a crime, not a prank. It’s hard to believe we need to explain this to people, but better safe than sorry.

Tip of the day for thinking critically

When we understand the elements of reasoning, we realize that all subjects, all disciplines, have a fundamental logic defined by the structures of thought embedded within them. Therefore, to lay bare a subject’s most fundamental logic, we should begin with these questions:

  • What is the main purpose or goal of studying this subject? What are people in this field trying to accomplish?

  • What kinds of questions do they ask? What kinds of problems do they try to solve?

  • What sorts of information or data do they gather?

  • What types of inferences do they usually draw? What types of judgments do they typically make? (Judgments about…)

  • How do they go about gathering information in ways that are distinctive to this field?

  • What are the most basic ideas, concepts, or theories in this field?

  • What do professionals in this field take for granted or assume?

  • How should studying this field affect my view of the world?

  • What viewpoint is fostered in this field?

  • What implications follow from studying this discipline? How are the products of this field used in everyday life? How might they be used in ways they are not currently?
