The government shutdown is close to an end despite no real changes to any policy items
Our take: The government has been shut down for almost 6 weeks. This one appears to follow the same trajectory and outcomes as all previous government shutdowns. The minority party withholds votes, demanding policies they want passed get consideration. The majority party refuses. A temporary continuing resolution gets passed, and the government reopens. That is the path this one appears to be following, including kicking the can down the road on the expiring health care subsidies that Democrats wrote into their own legislation in 2010 that was supposed to “fix” health care in our country.
What a complete waste of everyone’s time and energy. Paul Tagliabue had it right when he said, “All’s well that ends.”

Man is tired of feeling judged for drinking alcohol by those who have chosen to abstain
Our take: There seems to be a dry trend taking hold. Many people have decided to abstain from using alcohol. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be able to do so without morally proselytizing to others about how good and virtuous they are for doing so. This author has had enough of it. We tend to agree with him. Even vegans, hardcore environmentalists, and Karrine Jean-Pierre are telling sober life advocates to chill out a little bit on the advocacy. It’s entirely possible to make a good decision for yourself and just keep it to yourself.

Venezuelan immigrant shares first-hand experience to warn about the dangers of socialism
Our take: With the election of self-proclaimed socialist Zohran Mamdani as the mayor of New York, many people are debating the pros and cons of socialism and capitalism. This author is an immigrant from Venezuela, which used to be a capitalist economy but was converted to socialism in the 1990s after the election of Hugo Chavez.
The country with one of the largest oil reserves in the world managed to run itself into the ground to the extent that some people resorted to eating their pets to keep from starving to death. They did this by allowing the government to take control of supermarkets, housing, and pricing in the marketplace. The government promptly ran them into the ground.
This is not a new story. It can be seen in East Germany, Cuba, Sweden, and many other nations throughout history. There is plenty of empirical evidence that shows capitalist societies provide a more moral and meritocratic society than any socialist or communist country ever has. Countries built on capitalist economic models average roughly 5 times richer than their socialist counterparts.
The affordability issues in the US can be tied directly to government intervention rather than capital markets. Inflation? It is ALWAYS caused by more money chasing the same amount of goods and services—monetary policy controlled by the government.
Unaffordable housing? Look at the oppressive zoning laws, permitting issues, and property tax rates—all controlled by the government. Health care costs? Can you name a business more regulated or government-controlled than the health care industry? Why do we not have any issues with home, auto, or life insurance but cannot afford health insurance? You guessed it—government regulation and intervention.
As George Santayana famously said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” We know how this story ends because it always ends the same. When you confiscate other people’s money at gunpoint and think a small group of people can allocate it better than individuals can allocate it themselves, you eventually run out of money to confiscate after you squander all the money you stole from others. That’s when people start looking at Fido and wondering what seasoning they will use when they barbeque him. Wake up, people, before it’s too late.

Tip of the day for learning not to care what other people think about you
Today, think about a situation where you’ve been avoiding the fear of being disliked. How can you start embracing it? Maybe it’s a conversation you’ve been avoiding or a new situation that makes you anxious. Take that first step, and remember: you are enough just as you are.
Share with me in the comments what you’re going to do differently. Let’s all support each other as we step into our power and become the confident, authentic versions of ourselves we are meant to be.
