New York Attorney General Letitia James is under criminal investigation by the FBI

Our take: Letitia James was elected to be New York’s Attorney General in 2018. As a part of her campaign, she vowed to “get” Donald Trump, calling him an illegitimate president” and an “embarrassment.” James did not say what Trump had done that was illegal.

Fast forward a few years, and James prosecuted Trump for real estate fraud on several transactions where no one lost money, all loans were paid back as promised, and the lenders said they would do business with Trump again.

That brings us to the present day. Trump was swept into the White House in November. His appointees now run the federal law enforcement agencies. They started looking at some of the real estate transactions James has participated in as a private citizen. They found some sketchy stuff that James may soon have to answer for. Multiple allegations have been leveled publicly against James about several of these transactions.

The first is that she bought a property in Virginia and declared it would be her primary residence so she could qualify for more favorable mortgage terms. It’s obvious that the Attorney General of New York cannot live in Virginia.

The second is that she misrepresented the number of units of a property she bought in New York. The property was a 5-unit building, which makes it a commercial building and requires a commercial mortgage, which is typically more expensive than a residential mortgage. James is accused of misrepresenting the property as a 4-unit building, which would allow it to qualify for more favorable residential terms.

The third is that long ago, James represented that she and her father were actually husband and wife when they were buying a property together, again to qualify for more favorable terms.

The FBI office in Albany, the capital of New York, is handling the investigation. There is no word yet on the timing of the investigation or the actual items the FBI will investigate.

Let’s get a few things straight. The prosecution of Trump was a political witch hunt and a huge waste of taxpayer money. The investigation of Letitia James is a political witch hunt and a huge waste of taxpayer money.

That said, we are happy that Ms. James will have to face the music at some point. She comes across as sanctimonious and inauthentic. We hope she has to take the same medicine she forced on the Trump team for doing things that are arguably far more clearly illegal than what she pursued Trump on.

President Trump floats a tax increase on filers with over $2.5 million in income

Our take: Death and taxes. The only 2 things no one can escape. The federal government has to generate revenue from somewhere to fund important functions like defending the country, providing infrastructure like roads, bridges, railroads, and airports, and running courts and other necessary government programs.

President Trump is looking for ways to generate additional revenue in addition to the cost cutting measures his administration have been engaged in since taking office in January. One of his proposals is to add a new tax rate for high earners.

In his proposal, he calls for a 39.6% tax bracket for individuals earning at least $2.5 million or $5 million for those married filing jointly. Trump called Speaker Mike Johnson to float the idea. Trump also reiterated his desire to eliminate the carried interest tax break claimed by venture capital and private equity fund managers and executives.

There has been much discussion about Trump wanting to give tax breaks to the rich to take care of his buddies and business associates. He sure has a funny way of looking out for the people he is accused of acquiescing to.
