Representative says it’s “cruel” to issue work requirements for SNAP recipients
Our take: Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts said the Trump administration is cruel for pushing for SNAP recipients to work to receive the benefits. As part of legislation passed in May, Congress established new work requirements for SNAP recipients to continue receiving assistance.
More than one thing can be true at the same time. There are many people who are going through hard times and need some assistance until they can get back on their feet. There are also some people taking advantage of the SNAP program, intentionally avoiding work to receive benefits, as well as some that sell the benefits for cash to fund other activities in their life.
It seems to us that anyone with good intentions could either show they are working, show they are looking for work, or understand that they should contribute to society in a productive way in order to receive the help.
Receiving SNAP benefits does not make you less of a person. We should stop judging people and put safeguards in place to ensure that those that need benefits get them, as well as root out people who are trying to abuse the system.

Ex-Clackamas County commissioner is an international fugitive after fleeing the US with her son using a fake Austrian passport
Our take: This story is like something straight out of a spy thriller. Melissa Fireside was elected Clackamas County (Oregon) Commissioner in 2024. Two months into the job, she resigned after she was charged with stealing $30,000 from her mother’s boyfriend by forging documents and applying for a loan in his name.
Fireside was free on conditional release while facing the charges. She was supposed to go on trial in December, but authorities tried to revoke her bail after they determined she was not living in her home, which was a condition of her bail. Come to find out, Fireside is suspected of using a fake ID to cross the border into Mexico, where authorities believe she caught a flight to Austria with her 9-year-old son in tow.
Yikes! This lady is resourceful, to say the least. Forged documents, Austrian passports, surreptitious flights to Europe. I say we send Arnold Schwarzenegger after her. Originally from Austria, who better to track down someone this slippery than the Terminator?

2 men trespassed after fighting in line for the men’s room at the newly opened Bass Pro Shop in Texas
Our take: 2 men got into a fist fight in line for the men’s room at a newly opened Bass Pro Shop in Odessa, Texas. Although authorities were called, neither party would press charges, and both men were trespassed from the property. The 2 men agreed to settle the dispute in a duel at high noon on Main Street this weekend. Welcome to Texas.

Tip of the day for making friends
If there’s one point that conventional advice for making friends misses completely, it’s how selective you should be.
I don’t mean that you should be a snobby asshole, going around thinking you’re better that everyone else. All I’m suggesting is rather that trying to connect with anyone and everyone, focus on building deep, meaningful connections with a few key people.
It’s better to have a small group of close friends who truly understand and support you than a large network of superficial connections.
By being more selective, you’ll be more likely to find the right people who share your values and interests.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
