Fox News commentator says Somali culture is incompatible with a high-trust society

Our take: Exactly. I have absolutely nothing against the Somali people. That said, the culture in Somalia is rife with corruption, subjugation of women, and criminal activity as a valid profession. If we are going to allow people from a culture like this into the US, we need to be sure they do not agree with these cultural norms and are 100% committed to living by the laws and customs of the United States before we allow them to come into the country and become citizens.

This is not racist, it is not prejudicial, and it is not cruel. It is common sense. If you disagree with that statement, change the words “the country” in our last sentence to “your house” and see if you still disagree with it.

The company almost immediately regrets “zero tolerance” and no overtime policy

Our take: We say quite frequently that “zero tolerance” policies almost always lead to issues. This story magnifies that statement. A company instituted a “zero tolerance” policy for overtime whereby only the company president could authorize overtime work and needed to do so before the time could be worked.

Fast forward to the first after-hours emergency, which happened when a server went down at a customer site. The manager called the person who could fix it and said, "Get in there ASAP." The person correctly cited the “zero tolerance” overtime policy and asked for proof the company president had approved it.

The manager said they were approving it now because the company president was out of town and not reachable. The associate said, "Not good enough, Sunny Jim," and refused to go in without the necessary approval. The next business day, the company president, manager, and customer CIO jumped the associate for his adherence to the policy. The associate produced the written policy and showed it to the customer CIO, who thanked him and sent him on his way.

Remember—zero tolerance policies are typically in place for shitty leaders who suck at communication and organization. If you are in an environment with a lot of zero tolerance policies, we suggest you adhere to them with zero tolerance. No one there is going to have your back, because they are spineless when things get hard.

Texas dad tracks down kidnapped teenage daughter using cell phone tracking app

Our take: This guy is a father of the year candidate for sure. His teenage daughter took their dog for a walk and was gone longer than usual. He pulled up his tracking app and saw his daughter’s phone was in a wooded area outside of town. He jumped in his vehicle and tracked down his daughter, who had been kidnapped and was in a pickup truck with a partially nude 23-year-old man. The father helped the girl escape, and police tracked down and arrested the kidnapper. My man!!!

Tip of the day: How to win friends and influence people

Understand the Power of a Person's Name

Using someone’s name when speaking to them is a simple but powerful way to build rapport. It makes interactions more personal and respectful.

On the flip side, avoid unnecessary criticism, as it can quickly damage a relationship, especially if you’re still building trust with your colleagues.
