A Navy veteran was shot in the chest in Seattle by an insane man demanding proof of his military service

Our take: A Navy veteran who regularly performed music for donations on the Seattle waterfront was shot by an insane man who accused him of “stolen valor,” demanding the veteran produce ID, then shot him in the chest as the altercation escalated. The article we shared says some consider this a hate crime, but not every white-on-Black crime is motivated by race.

The shooter, Gregory Timm, has a history of violent and erratic behavior. In 2020, Timm plowed his car into a Republican voter registration tent in Jacksonville, FL. He told police he did it because he “did not like President Trump” and he felt the actions were “his duty.”

Note to self—if you see Greg Timm out in public getting worked up, run the other way regardless of your race. This guy’s cheese has slid all the way off the cracker.

The mayor of New Orleans, a former police officer charged in federal corruption probe

Our take: The mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, and her alleged boyfriend, a former New Orleans police officer, were charged in a federal indictment last Thursday, accusing them of a scheme to defraud the city and obstruct justice.

Among the alleged indiscretions were maintaining an intimate relationship, deleting thousands of messages, misleading colleagues, intimidating subordinates, and providing false statements to the FBI and a federal grand jury.

I’m betting New Orleans is about to get a new mayor. Ms. Cantrell is not a great role model since she was hailed as the first woman to hold the office of mayor in New Orleans. It turns out women can do anything men can do. In positions of power, they can sleep with subordinates and use their position to intimidate and obstruct efforts to hold them accountable. Maybe this is not what the women’s movement meant.

Tip of the day – how to change your mindset

One way to adopt a better mindset is to reframe the wording of what you think and believe. It should also cause us to verbalize things differently. We all have negative beliefs and biases that hold us back. Sometimes, they manifest themselves as negative self-talk. For example, you might say, "I'm not good enough," or "I can't do this." You can adopt a more positive mindset by reframing them: I'm not good enough. -> I'm getting better each day. I can't do this -> I'm learning how to do this.
