Teachers’ unions sue to prevent school choice

Our take: We are free market absolutists. If all things are equal, the market will always allocate resources better than any government or central planning body can under any circumstance. That will always hold true for goods, services, and scarce resources—including education.

Our biggest problem in our education system is the teachers’ unions that have a death grip on policy, billions of dollars to spend on influencing politicians, and a willfully ignorant support group that will refuse all facts and evidence that run counter to their narrative.

Teachers’ unions are losing the fight on charter schools and school choice, like education vouchers that are given to parents that can be used to send their kids to a school of their choice. Teachers’ unions don’t think anyone but them should have any say in how our kids are educated, but large public-school systems in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago have performed horribly in terms of functional skills like reading, comprehension, and mathematics.

Rather than fixing the process, they are suing governments to prevent school choice, claiming that any funds spent outside of public schools are unconstitutional based on each state’s constitution. Anytime someone wants to prevent you from having a choice, you can bet that they only have their best interests in mind, not yours. Offerings and ideas that have merit can withstand scrutiny and challenge. When your idea or output sucks but you want to maintain control, you do things like sue for compliance.

Our take:  If I had any books overdue to this library, I would get them returned ASAP. This lady clearly does not put up with things she does not like.

Woman attacked by snow leopard after failed selfie attempt

Our take: I did not think this needed to be said, but I guess it does. If you encounter a snow leopard in the wild, do not try to take a selfie with it. It is dangerous. Come on, people…

Tip of the day – How to control your emotions from Professor George Buzzell

Stop suppressing and start reappraising

Two of the most studied emotional regulation techniques are called reappraisal and suppression. Suppression is when you try to stop yourself from feeling emotions. When we do this, we often find that negative emotions return stronger than before.

Buzzell recommends practicing reappraisal instead. Reappraisal is changing the way you think about a negative emotion before having a response.

For example, if you made a mistake and feel disappointed, you can tell yourself that it was a learning experience, and then you are more likely to have a positive response instead of a negative one. This promotes a growth mindset, which studies show promotes healthier relationships with emotions. The good news is that people can actually change how they regulate their emotions to be more in line with reappraisal.
