DHS publishes photos of weapons confiscated from anti-ICE “demonstrators” in Chicago

Our take:  FYI—Peaceful protesting does not involve bringing firearms and explosive devices to your demonstration. Federal law enforcement officers took 2 guns and found what appears to be an explosive device from 11 rioters apprehended in Chicago on Sunday. The confiscation and apprehensions come just days after a gunman shot and killed a detainee and injured two others before shooting himself. I am done listening to “mostly peaceful protests” and “democracy is at stake.” If you are shooting people, or endorsing others who hold your beliefs shooting people, you need to be locked up away from society for a long time.

Stowaway found dead inside wheel well of flight from Europe to North Carolina

Our take: This is a public service announcement to prevent you from dying. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to stowaway on a flight in the wheel well or other unpressurized area of the airplane. It is rare, but common enough we see stories like this from all around the world. Someone attempts to catch a free lift but ends up paying with their life. If the complete lack of oxygen at those altitudes don’t kill you, the hypothermia from hours of subzero temperatures will. I don’t care what you saw in the movies – it will kill you.

A woman makes Ex-Lax brownies for her roommate, who kept stealing her food

Our take:  A woman who could not get her roommate to stop stealing her food solved her problem by making brownies laced with extra-strength laxatives and leaving them in the fridge. The roommate did her thing and then lost 10 pounds the hard way.

This story brings back memories of high school. 2 guys made identical brownies and left them in the teachers’ lounge as a senior prank. Several teachers had a very bad night after eating multiple brownies. The 2 guys were suspended and not allowed to walk for the graduation ceremony, but they remain legends. That said, this can be super dangerous – do not pull this prank on anyone. But it’s pretty funny.

Tip of the day for finding purpose in your life

Imagine your best possible self

This exercise is particularly useful in conjunction with the magic-wand exercise described above. In Greater Good’s Purpose Challenge, high school students were asked to imagine themselves at 40 years of age if everything had gone as well as it could have in their lives. Then, they answered questions, like:

  • What are you doing?

  • What is important to you?

  • What do you really care about, and why?

The why part is particularly important because purposes usually emerge from our reasons for caring.

Of course, those of us who are a bit older can still find these questions valuable. Older folks may want to reflect back rather than look ahead. She suggests we think about what we’ve always wanted to do but maybe couldn’t because of other obligations (like raising kids or pursuing a career). There seems to be something about seeing what you truly want for yourself and the world that can help bring you closer to achieving it, perhaps by focusing your attention on the people and experiences you encounter that may help you get there.
