Defense Secretary nominee Hegseth faces intense scrutiny over past behavior
CURRENT EVENTS.
Our take: Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary nominee picked by president-elect Trump, has faced increasing scrutiny from both sides of the aisle as he works through the vetting process. Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, faces scrutiny over a settlement he reached with a woman over sexual assault allegations years ago, as well as disparaging reports of his behavior as a leader in several not-for-profit roles.
This is all actually good news. The confirmation process laid out in the constitution for presidential appointees was designed to ensure that any president could not install people in positions in which they were not fit to serve. Hegseth’s treatment of women is 100% in play and relevant if he is to lead the US Military, the world's largest. Women currently make up 17.5% of all active-duty military members. They should feel good about their leader, which is hard to do if he has been treating women poorly his whole life. No matter how it plays out, we are glad Senators from both sides of the aisle are doing their jobs.

The Federal Register approaches a record 100,000 pages as Trump prepares to move back to the White House.
Our take:
When you hear someone say President X created jobs, don’t believe it for a second. The government has never created a single job—ever. The government has one source of money, which is to tax private citizens and confiscate part of their earnings to redistribute the funds elsewhere. Taxes and public sector work is a zero-sum game. The only way to grow the economy is to have a thriving private sector driven by entrepreneurship and creativity. The best thing any government can do to create this environment is to cut all but the most necessary regulations so private businesses can invest, take risks, and grow.
The federal register is the single place that all federal regulations are listed out one after the other. We have been doing the exact opposite of creating a low-regulation, high-growth environment for decades. Useless law after useless law gets added to the register, stifling growth and creativity. It’s not an accident that the last great innovation (the internet) was not regulated and quickly changed the world through creativity and innovation, while long-standing businesses like construction, retail, and real estate have been bogged down by draconian laws and rules, which slow growth and make it more difficult for businesses to make money.
With that said, some parts of government are necessary. Defending the nation, keeping people safe, and building roads come to mind. Other than that, we believe business should be like the wild west, where there were the quick and the dead. The economy would explode if we got there.

Proposal to end the daylight savings program floated by Musk, Ramaswamy, and others
Our take: Yes!!! This whole ritual has never made any sense to us. The time is the time. Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking would probably argue with us, but they can’t anymore. Adjusting the clocks doesn’t adjust circadian rhythms in people, change the number of hours in a day, or change the amount of sunlight in any 24-hour period. Before electricity was widely available, it may have made sense. A few weeks ago, we watched the SpaceX team catch a rocket as it fell back to earth. It’s time to quit screwing around with medieval mumbo jumbo and just leave the clocks alone.

TIP OF THE DAY
Every time you take on something new in your life, you should consider stopping something old in your life. We think a lot about new things and experiences, but we rarely think about giving up on things that no longer make sense. When you are setting your goals for 2025, think about the old things you want to get out of your routine as much as you think about new things you want to add to your routine.
