Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman might not be OK

Our take: John Fetterman was pushed into the national spotlight during a tight senate race in Pennsylvania in 2022. Just before the Democratic primary, Fetterman suffered a serious stroke.

Despite this serious health risk, he somehow managed to still win the Democratic nomination. It was obvious to all when Fetterman debated his Republican opponent that the stroke had caused significant problems with his brain function. He struggled to speak coherently but claimed he could understand everything but had trouble getting his thoughts out.

Miraculously, Pennsylvanians still elected him to the US Senate. Not long after taking office, Fetterman checked himself into a mental health facility to seek treatment for severe depression. Despite all the health issues, Fetterman has remained in office, largely getting support from all for his valiant fight against mental health issues and his recovery from the stroke.

Fast forward to this week, and a damning report about Fetterman has been published. Fetterman’s former chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, was the main source of information, but several current and former staffers corroborated the reporting. Jentleson resigned because he was witnessing “increasingly unstable and reckless behavior” from the senator, including getting behind the wheel of a car and causing a car accident, aggressive behavior towards his wife and others, and struggling with the demands and pressure of the job.

Oof. This is a tough deal. No one would wish a serious health issue even on their worst enemy. It is sad that Fetterman has had to deal with these issues. With that said, those closest to him, especially his wife, have a responsibility to have honest conversations with him, even if they are difficult. Fetterman appears to be incapable of handling the role, which is critical to the citizens of Pennsylvania and all Americans when you consider Fetterman is one of only 100 senators representing the 330 million+ citizens.

We are hopeful those closest to him will come to their senses and either get him the help he needs or, if he is no longer capable of doing the job, convince him to step down so a capable replacement can be installed.

Defenders of deported alleged gang members keep getting bad news about their boy

Our take: Kilmar Abrego Garcia is an illegal alien who was living in Maryland. He was deported by ICE, as he had an open deportation order against him since 2019. It is true that his legal representation successfully argued that he could not be deported back to El Salvador (where he is from) because there were gang members who wanted to kill him there. ICE sent him back anyway, which was a mistake.

With all that said, Democrats seized on the error to push back on the mass deportations that started on day one of the Trump administration. While it is clear Garcia should not have been sent back to El Salvador, he certainly should have been deported, and there is plenty of evidence that he is not a good guy. Democrats who have shown support for this guy, including traveling to El Salvador to meet with him, are having a harder and harder time winning the PR battle they chose to fight.

In recent weeks, it has emerged that Garcia beat his wife and was caught trafficking migrants during his time living illegally in Maryland. It also appears Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, a notoriously violent and aggressive Latino gang known for drug and human trafficking, as well as extortion and murder.

Garcia’s wife filed a protective order against him in 2020, accusing him of verbally and physically abusing her, as well as mentally abusing her children. This is a different picture than she painted during national interviews, saying he had been “an amazing husband and father.”

Brass tacks—it was a mistake to send Garcia back to El Salvador, but it was 100% right to get this guy out of our country. He had due process multiple times, where courts determined he should not be allowed to stay in the country any longer. Those that choose to offer a full-throated defense of Garcia do so at their own peril. Even if he is brought back to the US, he will quickly (and correctly) be deported to a country other than El Salvador. The question is which country loses the lottery and will be forced to deal with this guy when that happens.

Judge lies about military record, special counsel recommends her removal from the bench

Our take: The women’s equality movement was very necessary. Until around the 1970s, there was undoubtedly a huge deficit between what opportunities men and women could pursue. Through the actions of many courageous women (and some men who supported their efforts), progress has been steady.

In today’s world, there are literally no opportunities available to men that are not also available to women. In fact, the pendulum may have swung too far in the opposite direction, putting men at a disadvantage in society simply because they are men.

Toxic masculinity is fine to discuss freely, openly criticizing men for the simple fact they are men. It’s one of the only classes that everyone is free to insult and discriminate against. The author of this piece, who is the mother of 2 boys, does a great job of laying out some of her experiences and some of the problems and inequities she sees in society. It’s worth the 3 minutes it takes to read.

Tip of the Day

A tip for focusing is to create a strict schedule for yourself, with daily tasks you need to complete in order to reach your goals by a specific date.

Successful people also make it their top priority every day to complete those tasks before they do anything else.

Creating this kind of strict schedule for yourself might seem very structured and rigid, but highly successful people actually find it liberating.
