A man was charged with voluntary manslaughter after shooting a cleaning woman who went to the wrong house

Our take:  We don’t have all the details, but the ones we have are crazy. A woman showed up at 7 am at a home to do her job as a house cleaner. Someone called 911 to report a possible home invasion. Police showed up to find a woman shot dead on the porch. The shot had come from inside the house.

Good lord. I guess asking a few questions was too much, huh? Just pull out your gun and start firing? We find it hard to believe this woman with cleaning supplies was such a threat that the right move was to start indiscriminately firing at people on the porch. The deceased woman was a mother of 4, including an 11-month-old.

USDA boss says “everyone” will soon be required to reapply for SNAP assistance

Our take: USDA boss Brooke Rollins said the agency is planning on having “everyone” reapply for benefits so their situations can be evaluated after claiming over 186,000 cases of fraud were found when reviewing red state data on SNAP recipients—including deceased men, women, and children still receiving benefits. Currently, SNAP recipients are required to recertify their information every 6 months. The article does not go into detail on who or how those details are vetted for accuracy or necessity.

I would bet most Americans feel the same way about SNAP benefits. They strongly support helping those who actually need help, either because of temporary circumstances like a job loss or illness, or those who need help permanently due to physical or mental health issues that cannot be cured. They also want the administrators of the program to prevent fraud from happening.

Any government program is a target for fraudsters who want to bilk the system to their benefit instead of working for what they get. We see this anywhere people are offered help. SNAP benefits are certainly not any different.

Adding more rigor around the vetting process for these benefits seems appropriate when we have 40 million+ Americans on a program that is designed to provide temporary assistance. In a nation of roughly 350 million people, this means somewhere around 15% cannot provide food for themselves or their family. We don’t have any objective measure for this, but it is higher than we expected it to be.

Pilot who tried to cut engines mid-flight scheduled to appear in court for sentencing

Our take: A pilot who was traveling in a jump seat in the cockpit tried to cut the engines mid-flight. The flight crew subdued him and made an emergency landing, where the man was detained by authorities. Joseph Emerson stated he was despondent over a friend's recent death, had not slept for 40 hours, and had taken psychedelic mushrooms a few days earlier. He stated he thought he was dreaming, and pulling the levers to shut off the engines would wake him from his dream.

To his credit, Emerson has owned his mistakes and pled guilty, stating the incident forced him to deal with his mental health issues and alcoholism and has made him a better husband, father, and member of his community. Emerson has clearly lost his job as a pilot following the incident.

In recent years, there has been talk by major carriers about showing preferential treatment to perceived minority applicants like African Americans or women in the training and hiring of pilots. This incident is one more piece of evidence why it is paramount for the hiring process of life-or-death jobs to be blind to color, gender, or any other superficial characteristic.

We need the best people in these roles, regardless of how much sunblock they need or if they stand or sit to pee. Good (and bad) pilots come in all races and genders. Let’s make sure we have the right people in the cockpit for goodness’ sake.

Tip of the day for learning not to care what other people think about you

Remember that no one really cares about you

Are you emotionally invested in making sure your neighbor, coworker, or a stranger standing in line at the grocery store makes good life choices? Do you worry that they’re not doing what’s best for them?

Probably not.

Conversely, no one gives a shit about you either. Everyone is too busy minding their own business (probably worrying about what you think about them) to care. This means that they don’t have much energy to worry about you. This fact alone should relieve your anxiety about the opinions of other people.

Even if you think people are judging your life on social media, they’re far more concerned with the image they present to everyone else.

When you care about what other people think, you’re effectively their slave. Why should you give them control of your life? Why are you doing things for their sake?

People pleasers never please anyone–especially the people that they’re trying to please. You only have this one life. Why give it away to someone who doesn’t care about it nearly as much as you do?

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner.” – Lao Tzu
