Woman drives rental car off road while texting, tells owner she was run off road not knowing there was a camera in the car

Our take: Oof. A woman who totaled a rental car tried to tell the owner she was run off the road by another driver. Unfortunately for her, the dash camera in the car (which she didn’t know existed when she fabricated her story) told a very different story. NO other driver was involved. The woman was on her phone, eyes off the road for at least 20 seconds, while speeding. The lesson here is twofold. First, please stay off your phone and pay attention when you drive. Second, if you fuck up – own it and don’t lie.

A tow truck driver decides to tow an ICE vehicle in the middle of an arrest, and he is arrested himself, facing up to 10 years in prison

Our take: You can file this one under “fuck around and find out.” ICE arrested an illegal immigrant who made herself famous by following around ICE and recording them arresting people. Not a great idea, as she found out when ICE dragged her from her car and arrested her. While this was happening, a tow truck driver decided he would try to interfere with the arrest by towing an ICE vehicle being used to block in the driver. The ICE vehicle had its lights on and was clearly involved in the law enforcement action. No one called a tow truck. This guy just decided he would insert himself into the situation.

He is finding out now this was not a good idea. Others were filming the incident, and the footage was used to track down and arrest the tow truck driver. He is now facing federal charges that carry a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison. He was said to be laughing as he towed the car away. Let’s see how funny he finds it now that he is in an orange jumpsuit and making license plates for a few years.

Newsweek downplays murder rates in Chicago despite the highest number of murders in the country

Our take: Let’s start off with getting a few things straight. Chicago is a great city. It has millions of great people and tons of fun things to do. It also has a murder problem. Thousands of people are shot, and hundreds die every year. It is heartbreaking to see the photos of those lost to this terrible trend. Many people, including elected officials and law enforcement officers, work tirelessly to both solve the crimes that have already been committed and prevent future crimes from happening. That said, it is of little solace to those who have been impacted by losing a loved one in this manner.

President Trump has focused on Chicago to try and help prevent this violence. This has led many to push back and try to downplay the need for outside support or resources. Newsweek, in a misguided attempt to add support to those saying outside support is not necessary, printed a list of cities where murder rates per capita are higher than Chicago. This appears to be an attempt to downplay the murders in Chicago.

Yikes. This is a terrible approach by Newsweek. What do they think an acceptable murder rate in Chicago or any other city is? More than one thing can be true at the same time. Violent crime can be a big issue in any place—urban, rural, or suburban—it doesn’t matter. Playing whataboutism is a normal thing in politics, but we cannot abide it when we are talking about people losing their lives. We should all be working together to prevent these crimes anywhere in our country. This is bigger than politics. We need to work together to stop innocent victims from losing their lives. The only side we take on this issue is the side of people not dying. Shame on Newsweek.

Tip of the day for changing habits

Disrupt.
Once you know the cues, you can throw bad habits off track. If the alarm cues you to bash the snooze button every morning, put the alarm clock on the other side of the room. Trekking across the floor will likely disrupt the snooze habit.
