A protester stops to yell at ICE, car rolls into the lake because she did not put it in park

Our take:  The headline says it all on this one. A woman in Massachusetts saw an ICE arrest in progress and decided to stop and yell at the ICE agents. She did not put her car in park as she got out, so it rolled into the lake in front of her. There are feel good stories around every day if you look hard enough. You can feel however you want about the deportations happening around the country. Call us when someone who is not in the country illegally is deported. We have laws for reasons. You don’t get to decide which ones people have to follow.

The founder who bilked JPMC out of $175 million was sentenced to 7 years in prison

Our take: Charlie Javice founded Frank, a startup designed to simplify the process of applying for financial aid. It supposedly connected Frank with millions of young people, who are ideal targets for new customers of financial institutions like JPMC. Because of these millions of leads, JPMC bought Frank for $175 million. When they started spamming the emails for their newfound customers, almost none of them were real.

Miss Javice should have just admitted the lie and taken her medicine at this point. Instead, she proclaimed her innocence and went to trial. During the trial, communications and texts between Javice and a few close associates made it clear they not only knew the leads were not real, but they had also paid someone to fabricate the data.

The lesson here is when you make a mistake, own it immediately. The cover-up or denial is almost always worse than the pain or embarrassment of taking your medicine immediately.

The Bethpage crowd embarrasses the country with their treatment of European golfers

Our take:  Golf is known for its decorum and etiquette. The Ryder Cup, which happens every two years and pits 12 of America’s best golfers against 12 golfers from around the world, is typically more boisterous than any normal event. Crowds are louder, golfers are more animated, and in most instances, the heightened emotions are fun for all involved.

This year, the event was held at Bethpage Black, a course in Farmingdale, New York. Unfortunately, the crowd went well beyond the pale, hurling profanities at the European opponents, intentionally making noise and trying to disrupt the players' pre-shot routines (strictly verboten in golf and grounds for immediate removal from the tournament), and even throwing a beer at the wife of Rory McIlroy.

Good lord. This is embarrassing for the US golf community and the country as a whole. What the fuck, New York?

Tip of the day for finding purpose in your life

Cultivate positive emotions like gratitude and awe

To find purpose, it helps to foster positive emotions, like awe and gratitude. That’s because each of these emotions is tied to well-being, caring about others, and finding meaning in life, which all help us focus on how we can contribute to the world.

In her study with young adults, Kendall Bronk found that practicing gratitude was particularly helpful in pointing students toward purpose. Reflecting on the blessings of their lives often leads young people to “pay it forward” in some way, which is how gratitude can lead to purpose.

There are many ways to cultivate awe and gratitude. Awe can be inspired by seeing the beauty in nature or recalling an inspirational moment. Gratitude can be practiced by keeping a gratitude journal or writing a gratitude letter to someone who helped you in life. Whatever tools you use, developing gratitude and awe has the added benefit of being good for your emotional well-being, which can give you the energy and motivation you need to carry out your purposeful goals.
