Trump signs EO ending Federal Department of Education

Our take: Trump campaigned on eliminating “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the federal government, vowing to cut fat and stream line departments that did not make sense or add value. High on that list was the Department of Education.

Trump continues to make good on his campaign promises. Trump signed an executive order attempting to eliminate the U.S. Education Department on Thursday afternoon. Congress would ultimately need to approve a closure of the Education Department, but Trump's workforce reduction will shrink it.

The Trump administration began that process earlier this month when it got rid of nearly half of the department's staffers.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump said he wants to dissolve the department and move some of its assistance to students, including those with disabilities and others who attend high poverty schools, to other agencies and departments. He cited the nation's high rates of spending on students and low student test scores on federal tests as a reason why.

He again defended workforce reductions and budget cuts at the department.

"States that run very well are going to have education that will be as good as Norway, Denmark, Finland and those top countries that do so well with education," he said.

Our view here is pretty simple. The education system in the US is broken. We continue to spend more per student than other developed nations for inferior results in competency in math, reading, and writing. It’s time to blow it up. We are happy the administration is following through on its commitments, and we will stand and watch it burn with the rest of the supporters.

Our take: A New Jersey major is facing multiple charges in municipal court, including driving under the influence and child endangerment following an arrest on Monday.

According to court records, mayor of Lumberton Gina LaPlaca was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on March 17 for allegedly driving while intoxicated with a 2-year-old child in the rear driver-side seat of her vehicle.

LaPlaca was charged with endangering/abuse/neglect of a child which is a second-degree crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. She was also charged with cruelty and neglect, a fourth-degree crime that carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison.

LaPlaca was also cited for operating a vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving likely to endanger, traffic on marked lanes, driving with an expired license and an open container of alcohol.

According to police, a witness video showed a vehicle failing to maintain its lane in multiple instances and almost colliding with a utility pole. After law enforcement made contact with LaPlaca, she admitted to drinking and stated she had picked up her toddler from daycare, police said. A search of her vehicle found an open container of alcohol, according to the statement in the affidavit.

Here is hoping this woman gets the help that she needs after this wake up call. Thank goodness no one was hurt.

TIP OF THE DAY

If you exercise in the morning, get up early enough to finish breakfast at least one hour before your workout. Be well fueled going into a workout.

Studies suggest that eating or drinking carbohydrates before exercise can help you do better during your workout. And the carbohydrates may allow you to work out for a longer time or at a higher intensity. If you don't eat, you might feel slow-moving or lightheaded when you exercise.
